Email Marketing vs. Ads & Social: Why Email Wins Every Time

Why email marketing is king

When it comes to generating reliable, repeatable revenue, email marketing stands as the king of all marketing channels.

You’ve probably heard about the power of email before, but today, I’m sharing both personal insights and proven strategies to help you understand why this channel is essential.

PLUS how you can start using it effectively in your business, whether you’re a course creator, coach, online store owner, or a local business.

A Personal Story: How One Email Campaign Made $145,000 in Pure Profit

In 2018, I launched my first digital product.

Through the help of a JV (Joint Venture) partner, I worked with hundreds of affiliates who promoted the product to their audiences.

By the end of the launch, our total revenue hit $180,000.

Sounds amazing, right?

Well, there was a catch.

Since we worked with affiliates, they took 50% of the revenue as commission, and the JV partner took an additional 20% for managing the affiliates.

In the end, I went home with about $45,000 – good, but not quite as high as it looked.

However, I knew the real potential wasn’t just in the initial launch.

After the launch, I added all 3,000 new customers to my email list and wrote a 10-day post-purchase email series with a relevant upsell.

That campaign alone brought in an extra $145,000 in pure profit. No ads, no affiliates – just emails.

Over the next 12 months, consistent follow-ups, valuable content, and targeted offers through email marketing turned that same list into over $250,000 in revenue.

This experience alone shows why email marketing should be the backbone of any serious business.

Why You Need Email Marketing in Your Business

If that story wasn’t enough to convince you, here are three additional reasons why you should take email marketing seriously.

1. Email Marketing is More Profitable Than Other Channels

Let’s look at the ROI across different marketing channels:

  • Paid Ads: If you’re investing in ads, a good return is around 200%, meaning $1 invested can bring back $2. Results can be quick, but they come at a high cost.

  • SEO & Content Marketing: Content can bring an ROI of 900% over time – $1 can lead to $9 – but this return often takes six to seven months to materialize.

  • Email Marketing: The ROI here is jaw-dropping. For every $1 invested, email marketing can deliver $38–$44 in return. That’s 3,800%–4,400% ROI, and my own experience has validated these numbers.

Why is Email Marketing so Profitable?

Because once you have a lead’s email, you can reach them without extra spending. Each email is an opportunity to generate sales and build a relationship that can drive long-term profit.

2. Email Marketing Allows for Highly Personalized Messaging

Imagine attending a cocktail party with many potential clients.

You’re mingling, having casual conversations, and getting to know each other.

Later, you follow up with a select few, engaging in more personal conversations and possibly closing deals.

Now, think of social media as that crowded party and email as the private, follow-up conversation.

Social media is great for initial exposure, but inboxes are where you have your audience’s full attention.

Email marketing allows you to tailor your message to the specific needs, pain points, and desires of each subscriber.

You can segment your audience into smaller groups based on behavior, preferences, and purchase history, then send highly relevant content to each segment.

No other channel offers this level of one-on-one engagement.

3. Email Drives Immediate Results

The response rates with email are impressive and immediate.

On average, you can expect 20 – 40% of subscribers to open an email within 24 hours, and if you have a list of 10,000 people, that’s 3,000 sets of eyes on your message – instantly.

Compare that with social media, where even with a million followers, only a fraction may see your post.

Social platforms limit organic reach, and if their algorithms detect that a post is promotional, they might restrict its reach even further, forcing you to spend more on ads.

With email, you control the message, the timing, and the frequency.

Every email you send reaches your list, giving you a level of direct access that social platforms simply can’t match.

4. Email Marketing Puts You in Control

Imagine building a social media following of 1 million, only to wake up one day to find your account banned or deactivated.

This nightmare scenario has happened to countless business owners, and it’s devastating.

With email marketing, you own your list.

Even if your email provider shuts down (a rare occurrence), you can upload your list to another provider and be up and running again within hours.

Unlike with social media, your email list is an asset you control completely, making it a safer and more reliable investment.

How to Start Using Email Marketing to Grow Your Business

1. Integrate Email with Your Existing Channels:

I’m not suggesting you drop content marketing or paid ads. You need these channels to grow your email list and bring in new leads. However, your goal should be to capture as many email addresses as possible through every platform you use.

2. Offer Valuable Lead Magnets:

Create a free resource like a checklist, ebook, or course that people in your niche would find valuable. Offer it in exchange for an email address to build your list quickly.

3. Segment and Follow-Up:

Once people join your list, divide them into groups based on interest, engagement, or purchase history. Tailor follow-up emails to each segment’s needs. For example, leads should receive emails that nurture and encourage their first purchase, while buyers might receive tips to maximize the value of their purchase and suggestions for complementary products.

4. Be Consistent:

Don’t just email your list when you want to promote something. Build a relationship by sharing valuable tips, insights, or stories regularly. Think of it as building a conversation over time that leads to loyal customers and higher sales.

5. Test and Optimize:

Track the performance of your emails. Analyze open rates, click-through rates, and conversions, and adjust your strategies accordingly. Small tweaks can lead to significant improvements in performance.

Quick Recap: Why Email Marketing Reigns Supreme

  • Incredible ROI: An average of $38 – $44 return for every $1 spent.
  • Highly Personalized: Build deep, one-on-one relationships with customers.
  • Instant Engagement: Quick responses mean faster results and revenue.
  • You’re in Control: No risk of a sudden shutdown wiping out your audience.

Email marketing, when done right, is the most reliable revenue driver for businesses across industries.

By following up, building relationships, and crafting targeted offers, you can turn leads into customers, customers into repeat buyers, and grow your business with minimal ongoing costs.
